CASES RESOLVED
Start With the Work, Not Just the Number
A price in a Reddit comment is not a current quote for your charge. Check when it was posted, which allegation it concerned and what the representative agreed to do. A quick consultation, a resolution meeting and representation through a trial are not the same scope of work.
ParaCan's representation starts from $399 + HST. No-insurance and suspended-driving representation starts from $499 + HST. These are starting prices, not a promise that every matter costs the same. We review the charges, driving history, complexity and services required before confirming your quote.
The Law Society explains that legal bills distinguish fees from disbursements and that fees may use an hourly rate or an agreed flat amount. It does not set a standard price for legal services. Read the LSO explanation of fees and disbursements.
Value vs. Price: What Are You Actually Paying For?
Price is the number on the quote. Value is the work behind it. When your record or licence may be at stake, compare the preparation, evidence review, court work and communication included in that number.
For example, one quote might cover a resolution meeting while another includes preparation and representation at trial. Those are different services. A lower number is not automatically better value, and a higher number is not proof of better representation.
At ParaCan, we start by reviewing your ticket or summons, explaining your options and quoting the proposed work. Ask which steps we will handle, what you still need to do and how we will keep you informed. The value is having a clear plan and someone responsible for the agreed work, rather than trying to piece it together from conflicting online comments.
Time matters too. Help organizing the case and managing the agreed court steps can reduce what you have to handle yourself. Any attendance required from you still needs to be confirmed. You are paying for a defined service, not a promised dismissal.

Six Questions to Ask Before You Retain Anyone
Which charge and court does the quote cover?
Check whether the quote covers every allegation on the document or only one. Give each firm the same ticket or summons so you can compare the same matter.
What stages are included?
Ask about disclosure review, resolution discussions, court appearances and a trial if needed. Do not assume a short advertised description includes every stage.
What is the total, including tax and other charges?
Ask for the legal fee, HST and any anticipated expenses separately. Court fines are not representation fees. Confirm what could require a further quote.
Who will handle the matter?
Ask who is responsible for your file, who may appear and how you will receive updates. You can use the LSO directory to check the legal professional you are considering.
What would you still need to do?
Clarify your attendance requirements, document requests and next deadline. Hiring help does not mean you can ignore a notice or stop checking messages.
Will the scope and fee be confirmed in writing?
Read the proposed retainer before accepting it. Check the included work and ask about unclear wording. Keep the agreement and your receipts.
Is Hiring a Paralegal Worth It for Every Ticket?
Not every driver will make the same decision. The Ontario Court of Justice recommends considering the charge, complexity, your understanding of the process and the potential personal impact of a penalty when deciding whether to seek legal advice. A fee is not a purchase of a dismissal.
Compare the proposed service with the issue you need resolved. A comment saying someone saved money on a fine does not establish what representation is worth in your circumstances. Ask for a clear explanation of the proposed work, rather than a promised result.
